Today is the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens‘ birth. We can learn many things from all the attention he’s (still) getting today, but two things in particular stand out:
- Fiction endures. The best stories will continue to be told. Literary style and the “rules” for good writing shift around a little, but not so much that fictional awesomeness can’t be appreciated century after century.
- Readers have always been drawn to episodic writing and serialization. Cliffhangers and anticipation weren’t invented by television, and work beautifully with the written word.
Whenever we talk to anyone new about what we’re doing with Every Day Novels and serialization, the standard response we hear is, “Oh, like Dickens, right?”
Absolutely.
We’re proud to be carrying on this classic heritage of installment publication. Happy birthday, Mr. Dickens!
