Today is the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens‘ birth. We can learn many things from all the attention he’s (still) getting today, but two things in particular stand out:

Fiction endures. The best stories will continue to be told. Literary style and the “rules” for good writing shift around a little, but not so much that fictional awesomeness can’t be appreciated century after century.

Readers have always been drawn to episodic writing and serialization. Cliffhangers and anticipation weren’t invented by television, and work beautifully with the written word.

Whenever we talk to anyone new about what we’re doing with Every Day Novels and serialization, the standard response we hear is, “Oh, like Dickens, right?”

Absolutely.

We’re proud to be carrying on this classic heritage of installment publication. Happy birthday, Mr. Dickens!

Ball.

Today we were excited to wake up to not one but two features about Every Day Novels:

At Underground Book Reviews, AB Riddle says: “I think this is a brilliant concept, and I’m excited to read Lifting Up Veronica using this new medium. I will share my opinion of the experience after the series ends.”

At Girl in the Soap Dish, Every Day Fiction slush reader Sealey Andrews says: “Besides being a (soft) marketing effort for the peeps I work with at EDF, and a shout out for local writer, I am behind this project as a reader as well.” (read the full post here)

It’s great to see support for this venture, this way of reading, growing in the community around us.

Here it is, the spectacular wraparound cover artwork for Lifting Up Veronica!

(click for a larger view)

The artist is the amazingly talented Nico Photos — an absolute pleasure to work with, professional in his business dealings and prompt with deliverables, and we were blown away by his ability to listen and ask the right questions to produce exactly what was needed. His preliminary sketches were so good that we could have used one of them for the cover, and the final image goes beyond awesome, capturing everything we had hoped for and more.

We’ll need to add a few little things (like the title and author’s name and so on) to turn it into a book cover, but the artwork alone is so fabulous that we had to show it off.

We can now confirm that Lifting Up Veronica by K.C. Ball will begin serialization on Monday, January 23, 2012, and will run for 75 bite-sized chapters over fifteen weeks (a new chapter a day, Monday to Friday), concluding with the final installment on Friday, May 4, 2012.

The first five days of serialization will be available to read for free, but you’ll need to purchase a subscription to read the rest of the novel — fortunately the cost of a subscription is only US$5, hardly more than a large Starbucks latte, for over three months of serialized literary entertainment and shared reading experience with other subscribers around the world (plus an e-book to keep at the end of it all).

Subscriptions are scheduled to officially go on sale December 12th, but keep an eye on this space as we might test the system with an early bird special in advance. You have been warned.

On June 10, 2010, Every Day Novels was officially announced to the world in a newspaper article.

Kevin Young, our marketing & public relations representative, spoke with Gillian Shaw of the Vancouver Sun newspaper, and as a result, Every Day Fiction — Every Day Publishing’s original flagship magazine — was featured in a fantastic article, both in print and online, which was subsequently picked up by the Saskatoon StarPhoenix.

The article is highly complimentary about Every Day Fiction, but the biggest news in it is the addition of Every Day Novels to the Every Day Publishing family.

Every Day Novels will offer serialized novels — all the bite-sized craftsmanship of flash fiction, with the depth and complexity of a novel — on a paid-subscription basis. Charging a small subscription fee will allow us to offer authors competitive advances and royalties, so that we can attract good authors and bring you their finest work. Anyone can slap a rambling first draft up on a blog for free or chop an old novel into bites for serialization; we aim to take serialized novels to the next level by publishing high-quality polished work, written expressly for serialization and optimized for online or mobile reading.

We are already in talks with authors about our first titles, and we will make an announcement as soon as we have firm details to share.
